"Sharing, Caring and Celebrating Each Day"
Celebrating 18 Years of Quality Care
The Ruth Sheets Adult Care Center is dedicated to offering the best possible care for our participants. Each participant is evaluated and a care plan is established to best fit his/her individual needs. The care plan is re-evaluated and adjusted every six months to adjust the program to the changing needs of each participant. Special care is given to meet physical and mental abilities and to maintaining daily living skills.
Each day is filled with stimulating activities which offer an opportunity for social interaction: physical games (such as indoor bowling, golf and shuffleboard), trivia games and reminiscence for mental stimulation, and intergenerational relationships.
The Center is a home away from home filled with friendships, love, and a caring and dedicated staff.

A caregivers’ support group meets every 2nd and 4th Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in the ESUMC Parlor. This is a time to share concerns and needs in caring for your loved-one. The group is open to all in the community.

What is Adult Day Care?
It is a place for the frail seniors to enjoy the company of their peers in a safe caring atmosphere with trained staff. A daily schedule of events keeps everyone socially, physically and mentally engaged.
Whom is Adult Day Care for?
Adult Day Care is for the frail senior who can no longer be left at home alone. It enables caregivers to have free time to take care of necessary obligations while knowing that their loved-one is safe and happy.
When is it the right time for placement?
It is important for your loved-one to have a social life and spend quality time with their peers to avoid a feeling of loneliness. It is also important that caregivers have time to rest, socialize or do something for themselves. The right time for placement is before depression and feelings of isolation overcome both the frail senior and the caregiver.
Placing a loved-one in Adult Day Care is a difficult decision for family members. Family members sometimes feel as though they are abandoning their loved-one and they recognize, perhaps for the first time that help is needed in their caregiving journey. The important thought to remember is that you are not doing something TO your loved-one; you are doing something FOR your loved-one.

ANNUAL FUND RAISER DINNER DANCE
The annual Red Rose Dinner Dance and Auction was held on February 21, 2009 in Kerr Hall at Edenton Street United Methodist Church with 172 people in attendance. The honorary hosts were Rev. and Mrs. Ned Hill and the Ruth Sheets Adult Care Center Board of Directors. Those in attendance enjoyed a wonderful dinner of salmon, pork loin, rice, green beans, and a beautiful piece of red velvet cake for dessert. Dinner and dance music was provided by the Broughton High School Jazz Band under the direction of Jeffery H. Richardson. The silent and live auctions had a combined 200+ items for bid that were generously donated by various local businesses, ESUMC members, Sheets Center Board members and members of the community.
The guest speakers for the evening were Mr. John Keller, Rev. Ned Hill, and Mrs. Lou Wells. Mr. Keller, the son-in law of a Center participant, spoke about how valuable Adult Care Centers are to family caregivers who are working and how important the Center is to his mother-in-law. Rev. Hill, Edenton Street United Methodist Church's Senior Minister, spoke about the significance of the Ruth Sheets Center as a ministry of the church. Mrs. Lou Wells, a Ruth Sheets Center Board Member and ESUMC member, spoke about her interactions with Center staff and participants over the years and the Center's vision for the future.
Claudia Jackson and her pet therapy dog Mitzi were honored for their volunteer service to the Center. Claudia and Mitzi come to the Center every other Wednesday afternoon and spend time interacting on an individual basis with every participant. The Center's participants and staff always look forward to Claudia and Mitzi's scheduled Wednesday visits.
A great big thank you goes out to the Ruth Sheets Center Board, ESUMC members, Robin Ellison, Patsy Paris, Cecelia Holden, Center staff, ESUMC maintenance staff, student volunteers, and all those wonderful community members that made this years event a tremendous success. The financial success of the event is due to their generous contributions, time, and hard work.

Volunteers, a Vital Part of the Center
Volunteers play a very important role at the Ruth Sheets Adult Care Center. Eddie comes every Wednesday and Friday and spends time talking one-on-one, playing checkers, and working on art projects with the participants. Eddie also assists staff with many tasks and has been a fixture at the Center since its start in 1991. Jackie plays the guitar and leads a sing-a-long twice a month for the participants. Ambrose leads devotions every Tuesday and has done this for the past 18 years. Claudia and her pet therapy dog Mitzi interact with the participants twice a month on Wednesday's. Edward, one of our newest volunteers, is a kind and gentle young man who comes in on Mondays and Fridays to help staff and participants with anything from setting up activities, preparations for lunch, and spending time talking with participants individually. These folks, giving freely of their time and talents, make the day brighter and more meaningful for all who participate. During the year students from local schools come and entertain the participants with music, art, and story telling. Local church youth groups come and help with games and crafts during the summer. Special visits from church members who drop in just to say hello are always welcome.
