In February 1811, James Madison had just succeeded Thomas Jefferson as president of the United States when the Methodist annual conference met at the State House in Raleigh. Our nation and the City of Raleigh were both in their infancy.
Bishop Francis Asbury presided over that conference and described in his journal cold and snowy days, preaching to two thousand souls three times a day, with meetings sometimes running until midnight. One of the first events following that conference was the erection of a new house of worship, completed later that year, on the site where Edenton Street United Methodist Church stands today.
While the boards, beams, bricks and mortar at the corner of Edenton and Dawson streets have undergone many changes -- including being burned to the ground and rebuilt twice -- the spirit of the congregation has remained strong and steadfast. During this bicentennial year, we encourage you to explore these pages and learn how the past of this church is shaping its future, and how its members have been Sharing Christ from the Heart of Raleigh for 200 years.
The Bicentennial Celebration Committee continues its work designing an exciting and meaningful commemoration of our church's 200 years of ministry from the heart of Raleigh. In this time of celebration, we will honor our past and look to the future to seek new ways to serve God from this place.

Bicentennial Coloring Books
If your child does not have a bicentennial coloring book and crayons yet, come pick one up outside the chapel. They are great -- AND there is a scavenger-type hunt on the back to find the page images in the sanctuary.
