New Testament Bible Study

Fall/Winter 2016
Meeting Room 163
Dates: Weekly Monday Evenings beginning September 12, 2016 at 6:30PM.

This fall’s Bible Study text book is by Mark L. Strass and is entitled, “Four Portraits, One Jesus”.

NTH Bible Study strives to study Jesus and the Christian movement in its formative years in Israel and the Empire of Rome which had effectively annexed Israel, Syria, Turkey and Egypt in the 100 years prior to the birth of Jesus. The following paragraph describes in some detail the book we will use this fall to guide our study. To fully understand Jesus an in depth study of his life and times is most important.

To Christians worldwide, the man Jesus of Nazareth is the centerpiece of history, the object of faith, hope, and worship. Even those who do not follow him admit the vast influence of his life. For anyone interested in knowing more about Jesus, study of the four biblical Gospels is essential. Four Portraits, One Jesus is a thorough yet accessible introduction to these documents and their subject, the life and person of Jesus. Like different artist’s rendering the same subject using different styles and points of view, the Gospels paint four highly distinctive portraits of the same remarkable Jesus. With clarity and insight, Mark Strauss illuminates these four books, first addressing their nature, origin, methods for study, and historical, religious, and cultural backgrounds. He then moves on to closer study of each narrative and its contribution to our understanding of Jesus, investigating things such as plot, characters, and theme. Finally, he pulls it all together with a detailed examination of what the Gospels teach about Jesus’ ministry, message, death, and resurrection, with excursions into the quest for the historical Jesus and the historical reliability of the Gospels.

Study of Philippians with Linda Youmans
Tuesday mornings from Sept. 20 – Oct. 25. at 9:15-11:45

Philippians is a letter written by Paul, while he was being imprisoned in Rome. Joy is the dominant theme and this joy was possible for Paul-even in prison under threat of execution-because he had learned contentment and how to maintain a proper perspective. Paul knew Christ was his ultimate strength and resource. Please join us for this study of Paul’s letter from prison, and learn all that you possess in Christ, and how to find your joy in him.  Register here.
