What would you do if you had paid your monthly bills and there was not enough money left to pay your rent? What if, after buying food and clothing for your family, new tires for your car, and paying your water bill, you could not afford to pay for electricity?
Where would you turn for help? Who would come to your rescue?
The Doorstep Ministry is a unique ministry at Edenton Street that is working to solve that problem for some of our Raleigh neighbors who have the most need. Its goal is to assist people who are in crisis to cover two of their most basic needs: rent and utilities.
The Doorstep Ministry at a Glance:
How can you help?
Special Message For many years, Edenton Street UMC has helped residents of Wake County with various types of financial assistance. Several years ago, Rev. Ned Hill created a task force to study the greatest need in our community and how best to respond. A decision was made at that time to assist residents of Wake County who were in need of help with rent and/or utilities. This help is for folks who are in an emergency situation. We help once in a twelve month period and twice in a lifetime. In addition to financial assistance, we try to offer the love of Christ an invitation to worship and referrals for additional resources.
A new flyer is available to use especially on Sunday's for those requesting assistance. You will find the flyer downstairs in the clear pockets hanging on the wall near the first floor reception desk, as well as in the Narthex. On the flyer you will find information about where to find a free meal and shelter on the weekends. Many of the ministries listed are supported by Edenton Street through Missions. In addition there is a Blue binder at the Receptionist desk with resources available throughout Wake County. It isn't always easy to know how best to help, but hopefully this information will help provide some useful direction when you encounter someone in need.
If you know of someone who is in need of assistance with rent or utilities, please ask him/her to contact Amy at (919) 832-9530 (a direct line), Monday or Tuesday mornings from 9:30 AM – Noon. We have volunteers who then come Wednesday and Thursday mornings to meet with these folks and determine how Edenton Street might best help them.
Edenton Street has a wonderful history of helping God's children at our door step and beyond. Your prayers, presence and financial support make this happen in a very real way to many of our Wake County neighbors. I am grateful to be a part of such a dynamic congregation who truly cares about the least and the lost of God's children.
