In 1833, ESUMC Minister Melville B. Cox was the first American Methodist missionary to Africa. To this day, ESUMC remains committed to helping the people of Africa.
Liberia - For nearly 180 years, ESUMC has been involved in Liberia. Today, after years of civil war, the Liberian people struggle to survive in a country where corruption, unemployment, the lack of basic services and illiteracy are endemic. The Liberia sub-committee hopes to share Christ with the people in Liberia through a variety of ways. Current efforts include working with Liberians in the areas of growing and selling Moringa (a highly nutrional plant); maintaining beehives and selling honey; and other efforts to help people become self sustainable. If you would like to learn more and/or participate in efforts to help Liberia, you are invited to join this group. Email Jim Perry for more details.

The Congo - ESUMC has recently formed a sub-committee to raise awareness of the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as the people there recover from more than a decade of violent civil war, widespread disease and starvation, and a general breakdown of its civil government and economy. The sub-committee is working to identify and support programs that will help the people of the Congo rebuild their communities and become increasingly self-reliant, including sustainable agriculture programs led by the United Methodist Church's Committee on Relief (UMCOR). To learn how you can help, email Mark Thomas.
ZOE Ministry - ESUMC is also involved with ZOE (Zimbabwe Orphan Endeavor) Ministry. ZOE shares the love of Christ and gives hope to vulnerable children in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, and Rwanda through:
ZOE's Orphan Empowerment Project
Training in farming, animal husbandry, vocational skills, income-generating activities, HIV/AIDS education, health and hygiene. The training frees orphans from poverty and dependency within two - three years in the program.
