Ruth Sheets Adult Care Center

The Ruth Sheets Center is a safe place for older adults who need assistance with daily activities and care but do not need full-time placement in a rest home or nursing home. We provide a safe and friendly environment that allows family members to work or take respite from their caregiving duties.

We also provide supervision, activities, social interaction with others, nutritious meals, and snacks. Families have found that participants' involvement in such a stimulating environment during the day allows for better rest at night.

We are open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and are conveniently located in downtown Raleigh inside Edenton Street United Methodist Church.

We began in 1991, and we continue to provide a safe, friendly environment for our participants, who include the cognitively and/or physically impaired, or socially isolated frail elderly in need of assistance with activities of daily living.

We are a non-profit, state licensed social model adult daycare, and we expect to be licensed as a Social/Health combination model in the Spring of 2011. The Ruth Sheets Center is accredited by the NC Department of Health and Human Services Division of Aging and Adult Services. Our staff is required to attend professional certification and continuing education programs on First Aid, CPR, Alzheimer's Disease, Dementia, and other progressive conditions.

Need support?   We also offer a support group on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. This is a time to share concerns and needs related to your caregiving duties and is open to all in the community.

Ways to encourage participants   Quite often, new participants are at first hesitant to commit to attending adult daycare regularly. Yet we find once it has become a part of their routine, they begin to look forward to coming. Below are some of the ways our families have been successful convincing their loved one to begin attending adult daycare:

  • It's an opportunity to volunteer, to assist others who may need their help.
  • It provides safety and security at the center, as opposed to being home alone all day.
  • It's a chance to spend some quality time with other people, and even a way to get a break from their caregiver.
  • It's a great opportunity to enjoy fun activities, such as art, music, crafts, puzzles, trivia, checkers, etc.

Annual Gala Benefit   The Red Rose Dinner Dance is our annual fundraiser held each spring. This fantastic evening includes great dinner and dancing, additional entertainment through a special program, and live and silent auctions featuring the work of local artisans and community supporters.
