Camp Shalom

June 22-26

Umstead Park

Camp Shalom is a week-long, all-day Christian camp at Umstead State Park sponsored by Edenton Street United Methodist Church since the summer of 1981. It originally started as a leadership opportunity for our high school youth and has become a favorite week for many children in our congregation. Elementary children have fun just being kids and looking up to their high school counselors, middle-schoolers begin taking on some leadership roles while participating as kids, too, and our high school youth feel an overwhelming desire to give back to a program that has meant so much to them throughout their lives. The week combines fun, learning, worship, and play in a celebration of God's creation for rising 1st graders through 12th graders.

 FAQs

These FAQs are focused on the perspective of rising 7th-12th graders at Camp Shalom.

  • Camp Shalom is for rising 1st graders through graduated 12th graders.

Camp consists of white shirts (elementary aged kids), blue shirts (rising 6th grade), red shirts (rising 7th & 8th grades who serve camp) and yellow shirts (rising 9th through 12th graders who lead groups or stations during camp). Yellow shirts are the main leaders for their groups during the entire day and will lead with a group of their peers.

Camp does not run without our adult volunteers too!

  • Camp Shalom begins on Monday, June 22 at 7:15 am! Please do not arrive at 7:15 am, but be in the parking lot ready to go at 7:15 am!

We will gather every morning in a parking lot (location TBD) close to Umstead Park and we will return here each afternoon (Mon-Fri) at about 5:00 pm.

  • The registration fee for Camp Shalom differs for the age groups.

Summer 2025 prices were as follows:

    $225 for rising 1st-6th graders

    $200 for rising 7th-8th graders

    $125 for rising 9th-12th graders

Prices may increase for summer 2026.

If you are in need of financial assistance, please indicate that on your registration form and someone will be in touch. Or contact Emily (1st-6th graders) or Lucy (7th-12th graders), and we can discuss options. We never want the cost of camp to deter a student from joining us, so please let us know how we can assist you.

  • Camp Shalom is located out at Umstead Park at campsites Crabtree and Lapihio. On Wednesday, Camp Shalom goes to Falls Lake for the day.

  • Camp Shalom provides two snacks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon and lunch. Snacks and lunch are kid-friendly made by our very own Angela Carrington. If your child has dietary restrictions, please indicate that on the registration form. Participants can also bring their own food.

Camp Shalom is a nut free camp!

  • Camp Shalom participants will meet in a designated parking area (TBA) close to Umstead Park. Students who can drive can leave their cars there during the day. Participants will be transported to camp on two charter buses as well as the yellow bus. Additional vehicles such as the mini bus will be used as needed. All drivers are background checked.

  • Our Red Shirts are our emerging leaders. They are not yet leading camp, but they are learning what it means to be a leader.

First year Red Shirts are the backbone of camp. They truly are serving camp, but not always in a way that is seen by everyone. These campers are going to do the hard work of cleaning up camp and serving meals and snacks.

Second year Red Shirts are in transition to Yellow Shirts. These students are learning how to be the leaders of camp. How to run activities and lead campers. These students will spend most of their time in groups or on activities.

  • Yellow Shirts are the leaders of camp. They are responsible for the White Shirts, the campers, throughout the week. Their role is to create a fun and safe environment for your campers. This will look differently depending on their role and the age group.

Not only is their role to lead the white shirts, but to also be a team player amongst their other yellow shirts, their adult yellow shirts, their red shirt, and all other camp staff and volunteers.

  • Camp Shalom is led by our high school students, however, we have adults all throughout camp to help those students lead well.

The Camp directors include Shannon Montague, Emily Funderburk, Rush Beam, Lucy Ham, and Pete Cotter.

Each station and group has a background checked adult present. Additionally, we have volunteers that assist in the kitchen and in many other capacities.

Camp always has a medical professional on site.
