Empowering orphans: Meet LAWINA

After the loss of her father, at just 16 years old, Lawina became the caregiver for her two younger siblings. With no income and no one to turn to, there were many nights Lawina and her siblings went to bed hungry. Desperate to provide, Lawina began selling small bags of coal—doing whatever she could to help her family survive.

Then she found Zoe Empowers and joined the Freedom Empowerment Group, sponsored by our church.  In the second year of the three-year program, Lawina has discovered hope and a path forward. She has a goal of becoming a restaurant owner, and is well on her way!  She’s received training in business, agriculture, health, and children’s rights, along with a grant to start a small food business serving cooked meals in her community. She also created a kitchen garden growing water greens and cassava.

Today, Lawina and her siblings live in a safe home with enough food to eat—and one of her siblings has returned to school.

Help more young people like Lawina overcome extreme poverty for good.

Join us in reaching our Lenten almsgiving goal of $28,500 to fund a new Zoe Empowerment Group—coming alongside orphaned and vulnerable youth and children in Liberia.
